Every spring, the Diablo and San Ramon Valleys transform into one of the Bay Area’s most beautiful outdoor escapes. Recent rains turn the hills vibrant green, wildflowers blanket the open space, and seasonal waterfalls begin flowing once again. It is the perfect time to explore the incredible trail systems within Mount Diablo State Park and Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. For locals, these parks are more than hiking destinations. They are part of the lifestyle that makes living in the East Bay so special.
Mount Diablo’s Best Spring Trails
Spring may be the best season to experience Mount Diablo State Park, when the mountain comes alive with flowing creeks, colorful wildflowers, and panoramic views.
- The Donner Canyon and Falls Trail is one of the park’s most rewarding spring hikes. This moderate 6.3-mile loop on the mountain’s north side features seasonal waterfalls, lush canyons, and some of the area’s best wildflower displays.
- For an easier walk, the Mary Bowerman Trail near the summit offers a short 0.7-mile paved loop with stunning 360-degree Bay Area views and excellent opportunities to see native spring plant species.
- Families often enjoy the Rock City and Wind Caves Loop, where unique sandstone formations and cave-like openings create one of the park’s most memorable adventures on a 1.5-mile trail.
- On the mountain’s western side, Macedo Ranch Staging Area provides a quieter gateway into Mount Diablo’s scenic backcountry trails – Pine Canyon Loop. The peaceful oak-covered hills and open space make it a favorite access point for hikers, cyclists, and equestrians.
Exploring Las Trampas Wilderness
Just west of Mount Diablo, Las Trampas Regional Wilderness offers rugged trails, shaded canyons, and sweeping ridgeline views above the San Ramon Valley.
The Ringtail Cat to Madrone Trail Loop, a 5.5-mile trail at the end of Hemme Drive in Alamo, offers a more immersive wilderness experience with expansive valley views and access near the historic Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, also known as Tao House
